Mats or mounts are the coloured decorative boarders used to surround an artwork, certificate or photograph. We have hundreds of colours and textures to choose from, and together with our Computer Mat Cutting have an endless supply of designs & shapes,  which we can add to your framing item.

Do you have a company logo ? Pro-Frame Design can also duplicate your logo onto the mat with a process called mat embossing. This process works by pushing a continuous impression into the mat to make a subtle pattern, picture or logo. The same process can be cut as an opening or v.groove depending on how complex the logo may be.

Pro-Frame Design matboards by the sheet in both standard and oversize boards, we deal with several suppliers and regulary stock Multi Mat and Watermark matboard. We also have a liited range of Cresent matboards, and have can order any colour from this range ( allow upto 7 days for special order matboards ).

Framing it correctly, or even encasing it, is very important to use acid free materials, avoid exposure to moisture and mount each item correctly to avoid any deterioration.

Is framing a Photo as simple as, puting it in a frame.......?

The answer is no.

There are many techniques to photo framing.....

Blockmounting - a process of mounting the photo directly onto a bevelled MDF board,  is the cheapest way to frame a photo, but not without its problems, MDF is full of acid and can, over time, cause the photo to fox (brown markings on the photo) which are actually sections of the photo being eaten by the acid. Although it is a cheap alternative to framing, it is not a recommended application to anything that may hold financial or sentimental value.

Conservation Mounting - This process involves mounting the photo to an Acid free Board which helps to keep the photo flat and ripple free, without the worry of future photo damage. With the addition of mats (coloured boarders) any number of combinations and looks can be achieved.

Mat & Mount (Hinging photo behind mat) This process is popular with photographers, who need to boarder their photos to go into competitions, it is also the correct way to mount Limited Edition Photos & Signed Photographic Memorabilia, as it protects the value of the item by not mounting them down.

Canvas Photo Stretching - Photos are printed onto canvas, and stretched onto a Canvas Stretcher Frame. One of the most popular ways of framing photos in the last couple of years, it is simple, and also very effective when stretched onto a 40mm Canvas frame.

Pro-Frame Design has a complete restoration service.  We cater for Photographic, Artwork & Frame Restorations and also provide a Mirror Re-silvering Service.

Most Photo and Artwork Restorations are a result of Foxing or Acid Bleed, where the item has been mounted onto a board that is not acid free, these items are a result of either poor quality framing or simply from framing practices before conservation framing was even considered.

We also see alot of water or fire damaged items that need attention, and in most cases can be brought back to their pre-damaged life.

Some customers choose to have an old frame restored, rather than using a new frame with an aged look. It may be that the item is an heirloom and they want to preserve it for future generations. The costs in some cases can be quite expensive depending on how intricate the frame design is and how much damage has occured, nether the less, Pro-Frame Design can bring it  back to life.

Mirrors, like Antique frames, are often brought to us for resilvering, depending on the shape of the mirror, it is more economical to just replace it, however, should it be a special shape, with sculpting or maybe the shape of the mirror isn't square ( eg the sides are curved, and the top is concave ), then opting to have the mirror resilvered is probably the best option. The process involves the coating on the back of the glass being stripped clean, then a new mirror finish is a applied, costing varies, depending on size and work involved, but the end result is always flawless.
